Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for a Category A and B firearms licence in the NT, applicants must:

2. Identification and Documentation
Applicants must provide 100 points of identification, which can include:
Passport
Birth certificate
NT driver’s licence
Utility bills
Electoral enrolment documents
3. APPLICATION FORM

5. Storage Requirements
Safe storage is a critical requirement for obtaining a firearms licence. Applicants must provide:
Evidence of an approved storage facility or access to one.
Self-declaration for storage and safekeeping of firearms (most common)
Photographs showing the entire safe, locking mechanisms, and securing points to the wall or floor.
Alternatively, a letter of permission for storage with a current licence holder or dealer.

6. Firearms Safety Examination
First-time applicants are required to:
Read the 'Firearms Exam Training Guide' to prepare for the exam.
Sit and pass a firearms safety examination with 100% accuracy.
You can either do this through Learn To Shoot, or by passing a written or oral exam at the Palmerston Police Station.
Note: Corporate License, Employees and other Occupational Licenses cannot site the written or oral exam at the Palmerston Police Station and must obtain a FTSC through an approved instructor
7. Application Submission
All applications must be lodged in person at an NT Police station. Applicants should:
Complete all sections of the application form, writing N/A where not applicable.
Provide all supporting documentation and applicable licence fees.
For renewals, submit the application well in advance, ideally six weeks before the current licence expires.
Make sure you take your 100 points of ID with you, including your NT Drivers License with current address.
For Darwin Residents, Palmerston Police Station is the only location you can submit Firearms Applications.
8. Criminal History Check
The Firearms Policy and Recording Unit (FPRU) will conduct a national and NT criminal history check for each applicant. It is essential to:
Answer all criminal and personal history declaration questions truthfully.
Disclose all history, including youth offences and adult charges
Failure to disclose, or providing false information WILL result in the application being refused and a ban on reapplying being issued.
